Why your Google Business Profile views dropped, and the fix

The short answer
Usually because fewer people click at all rather than because you slipped. Google AI Overviews now appear on roughly 48% of tracked queries, and Pew found people click a result in only 8% of searches showing one, against 15% without. Views fall while the business is unchanged. The fix is completeness, photos and recent reviews.
The most likely cause is not you
Before auditing anything, understand the backdrop. AI Overviews appeared on roughly 48% of tracked queries as of early 2026, up sharply year on year. When one appears, Pew's study of nearly 69,000 real searches found people click a traditional result 8% of the time, against 15% when no summary appears.
So a profile can be doing everything right and still show fewer views, because the search result increasingly answers the question in place. That is a channel change rather than a penalty.
It is also why panicking and rewriting your business description rarely helps. The fix is to be the business the summary names, which is a different job from ranking.
The causes that are you
Having said that, several genuinely common problems do drop views, and they are all easy to check in ten minutes.
Check these in order
- Primary category. Wrong or too broad is the single most common cause, and changing it moves things within days
- Hours, including holiday hours. A profile marked temporarily closed by an automated update is more common than it should be
- Duplicate listings competing with each other, usually left behind by a move or a rebrand
- Photos. Profiles with recent photos consistently outperform stale ones, and most businesses stopped uploading years ago
- Review recency. Not the rating, the date of the most recent one
- Someone else's edits. Google accepts suggested changes from the public, and they are not always well intentioned

The thirty day fix
Spread over a month rather than done in one sitting, because a profile that changes everything at once looks less trustworthy than one that is steadily maintained.
Week one: fix the fundamentals. Primary and secondary categories, hours, service area, description, and every attribute the form offers. Completeness is a ranking input and most profiles are half filled.
Week two: photos. Ten new ones, taken on a phone, of actual work rather than stock. Then set a reminder to add two a week forever, because this is the field that decays fastest.
Week three: reviews. Turn on an automatic request triggered by job completion, and reply to every existing review including the old ones. Replies are readable text and they are read.
Week four: posts and questions. Add a post weekly, and seed the Q&A section with the questions you actually get asked, answered properly. That section is unusually well suited to being quoted by an assistant.
The half nobody is doing
Since a growing share of local discovery now happens inside an assistant, the profile is no longer only competing for a click. It is competing to be the business an assistant names.
That means the same work pays twice: OpenAI licensed Yelp data in July 2026 to power ChatGPT's local answers, alongside an existing Foursquare licence, so the listings you fix feed assistants directly.
It also means claiming the other listings. Yelp, Apple Business Connect and Bing Places are all free, all take under an hour combined, and all feed something. Only about 1.2% of local businesses currently get recommended by ChatGPT, which makes this unusually cheap ground to take.
The profile is no longer only competing for a click. It is competing to be the business an assistant names.
What not to do
Do not stuff keywords into the business name. It is against the guidelines, competitors report it, and a suspended profile is far worse than a quiet one.
Do not delete and recreate the listing to start fresh. You lose every review, which is the asset the profile is actually made of.
Do not read week to week. Local visibility is noisy enough that a bad fortnight means nothing. Compare a month against the same month last year, and judge the fix at ninety days rather than at nine.
Common questions
- Why did my Google Business Profile views drop suddenly?
- Most often because fewer people are clicking at all. AI Overviews now appear on roughly 48% of tracked queries, and clicks fall from 15% to 8% when one appears. Check your category, hours and duplicates, but expect the cause to be the channel.
- Does adding photos actually help?
- Yes, and it is the field that decays fastest because most businesses stop uploading after setup. Ten recent photos of real work, then two a week, is one of the cheapest improvements available.
- How long does a profile fix take to show?
- Category changes often move within days. Photos, reviews and posts compound over weeks. Judge the whole thing at ninety days and compare against the same month last year rather than last week.
- Should I claim Yelp and Apple listings too?
- Yes. OpenAI licensed Yelp data in July 2026 for ChatGPT's local answers and already licensed Foursquare, so those entries now feed assistants directly. All are free and take under an hour combined.
- Can I put keywords in my business name?
- No. It breaks the guidelines, competitors report it, and suspension is much worse than a quiet profile. Use the category and description fields for that instead.
